On April 14th, 2016, a magnitude-6.5 quake (M7.3) hit city of Kumamoto followed by a series of major earthquakes one after another causing deaths, injuries and widespread damage to the area’s residences and infrastructure. As aftershocks continue, tens of thousands of people have moved into evacuation centers which are doing their best to support the evacuees’ needs. The total damage, mainly to houses, from the strong earthquakes in and around Kumamoto Prefecture totaled 2.4 trillion yen to 4.6 trillion yen (about $22 billion to $42 billion) in Kumamoto with some 102,456 homes and buildings are listed as damaged or destroyed.
